At Cockburn’s, we have a long tradition of passion, both for our wines and for our people.
We pioneered the move into some of the most remote sub-regions of the Douro Valley. To do this we built long-standing relationships with farmers in one of the toughest winegrowing regions in the world.
Our Special Reserve Port, first launched in 1969, was one of the most revolutionary moves in the Port market. Ours became the Original Reserve Port – a Port of very high quality, that was aged for longer in wood barrels to give it balance and complexity but which was more widely accessible than Vintage Port. In doing this Cockburn’s created a sensation. Previously Port was polarized between Ruby and Vintage: there was no middle ground. The arrival of Cockburn’s Special Reserve on the scene opened up a completely new category, helping to transform the Douro and the lives of its people.
It is part of our ongoing tradition to be fortified by some core principles.
A spirit of innovation and tradition
In everything we do, we are going back to our roots, but at the same time we keep innovating.
One of our proudest moments was when, in the 1970s, our team in the Douro, then led by Miguel Corte Real, used clonal selection to bring back from the brink of extinction the Touriga Nacional grape variety. Things grew from there (literally) and it is now one of Portugal’s most iconic varieties. Much of the Touriga Nacional planted across Portugal originated in these vineyards. Through innovation we rediscovered our traditions.
Looking to the future
We care for our land wisely so that future generations continue to enjoy it. The Douro Valley is our home and we treat it that way. All our vineyards are managed according to the principles of sustainable and minimum intervention viticulture. We do this because we believe in the importance of preserving the natural splendour of this beautiful mountain wine region.
A spirit of excellence
No one in our family is satisfied with anything but the best. Years of experience, confidence, patience and craftsmanship ensure that we deliver it.
The power of people
We believe there is a connection between the quality of the wines we make and the happiness of our people. The art of making great wine and caring for people are both embodied in the independent family business. It is because of this attention to detail that Cockburn’s has regained this part of it’s history under the stewardship of the Symington family.
It’s a family thing!
